EXPERIENCE:
North Carolina State University: Mountain Crop Improvement Lab, Mills River, NC
 
Research Assistant [Summers 2005-2009]: Assisted technicians and faculty with breeding projects which included: pollinations, propagation, maintaining breeding stock and hybrid populations within a greenhouse, data collection and entry, seed collection, flow cytometry, cytology and tissue culture work. I also worked with faculty and staff to develop a Rudbeckia breeding project that ultimately resulted in publication.

Summer Intern [2010]:  Worked with staff, volunteers and the public to maintain the gardens, complete and update plant records, and promote the arboretum. To better understand public horticulture and private gardens, I also visited and met with staff of other area gardens including Longwood Gardens, Winterthur, Chanticleer, Morris Arboretum, and the Mount Cuba Center.

Teaching Assistant [HS212: Ornamental Plant Identification Spring 2012]:
I was responsible for leading plant identification walks that covered over 230 plants, providing plants for individual review, and aiding the lead professor in preparing for exams and review sessions.
 
Plant Resources and Ecology in Eastern China [Hangzhou, China; NCSU Study Abroad Opportunity, Summer 2012]: A one-month study abroad opportunity that explore the natural plant resources and culture of Eastern China. The coursework included: lecture attendance (lectures focused on systematics, plant biogeography, ethnobotany, and the North American East Asian disjunction), field work (plant identification, herbarium specimen collection and preparation), and student-derived summation presentations.

Proficient in basic Spanish: Lived with a family in Merida, Mexico for three months as part of an immersive study abroad experience that focused on language acquisition, Mayan culture, and the economics of tourism.

Research Assistantship: Graduate work at NCSU 2011-present- I was awarded a Research assistantship that covers tuition, student insurance, and some living expenses. As part of this assistantship, I aid in research and extension outreach, have served as a teaching assistant, and maintain high academic performance.
Glenn Goldsmith Breeding Excellence Scholarship Recipient [Syngenta] 2012:  A national competition for a single scholarship awarded to a student working toward a degree in plant breeding.
Sidney B. Meadows Scholarship Recipient 2012: Criteria for this scholarship includes high academic performance, determination, demonstrated interest in the horticulture industry within the Southeastern United States, and financial need.

GIVING BACK:
Pi Alpha Xi [Iota Chapter] Vice President of Woody Plants [2011/2012], Marshall [2012/2013]: Pi Alpha Xi is a national honors society for landscape horticulture, floriculture, and ornamental horticulture that promotes fellowship, scholarship, professional leadership and enrichment of human life through plants (requires a GPA of 3.5). As vice president of woody plants, I was in charge of ordering labeling, and organizing over 1,000 woody plants obtained from local wholesalers at each of our two annual sales. During the 2011-2012 year, PAX (a non-profit) raised over 7,000 dollars, which helped to fund local horticultural endeavors and organizations.
